Wannabee Trail Runner
Vic Landon
One of the things we really love about where we live is that there are so many sports and activities on our doorstep, sadly some of those sports have not been possible for me because of two rather large physical constraints (others I don’t do because of fear).
2021 was a huge year for me as I finally plucked up the courage to have a life changing operation which was realised by the excellent health service here in France. I had just over 2kgs removed from my boobs and I couldn’t be happier. This has had so many benefits already but now I’ve had the all clear, exercise is the thing I’m looking forward to most. I have no excuses now.
At school I was never the sportiest person but my strengths were badminton and cross country running (I was never the fastest but I always finished even if I did only have one shoe on!). I managed to continue with badminton by strapping the old assets up but running of any shape or form was a non starter. It’s always something I’ve had aspirations for. As a child we cheered my mum on for a number of half marathons and I always loved the atmosphere.
So here I am a 47 year old novice, 30 years since I last ran any significant distance and I appear to have signed up to do a half marathon in July. It’s not any half marathon - that would be the sensible option. I’ve gone and signed up for the Luchon Aneto Trail 21km run which has an ascent of over 1300m - about the same height as Ben Nevis - whoops.
I have all the gear but absolutely no idea. I’m starting from zero but let's see how far I can go. I’ve always been a little terrier, determined is one of my traits. Luckily I have KP core connection as my trainer and I’m sure she’ll kick my behind and help me get there.
Any hints and tips are gratefully received. If anyone fancies joining me there are routes for everyone ranging from 10km to 85km
Watch this space for progress and tales of ridiculousness (wherever I am randomness seems to follow).
